Seneca Candle

$62.00

A limited edition collaboration with SUBJECT BUREAUX

The story of Seneca Candle is the story of Seneca Village – a predominantly Black community, c. 1820s to 1850s, positioned where the area between 82nd and 89th streets is today, on the West side of Central Park. It is an allegory of what happens when amnesia enacts itself, forcefully, in the public realm.

The people of Seneca Village were the earliest weavings of the potential fabric that would be a new New York; potentially a new State, United. It is from that imagined optimism, and the unknown memories of those displaced, that Seneca Candle became manifest.

The Seneca Candle is a form cast from remnants of Manhattan Schist found at the Seneca Village site today. It is an object carrying a displaced memory, made from an object found in a place that itself holds displaced memories.

100% beeswax, unscented.

3 x 4 x 7 inches
